This large, elegant Victorian hotel is typical of many Bath houses - superbly positioned and built of the honey-coloured stone for which the City is famous. My wife Clare and I opened the Old Spot Restaurant in 2006 after having found what we knew was a great position in Wells, a historic cathedral city with a thriving market on the edge of the Mendip Hills, a very beautiful part of the world. The bells from St Thomas, St Cuthbert and the cathedral all ring on the hour. Wells Cathedral has the world’s heaviest ring of 10 bells. The famous astronomical clock in the north transept of the cathedral is considered to be the second-oldest clock in the British Isles.
