Allendale Town is the largest settlement in the Allen Valley. Fascinating traces of the lead mining past remain, whilst high-pennine hay-meadows and the moorland above local farms are a rare national wildlife treasure. Shops, galleries, pubs and tourist attractions can be found in this 'capital' of the Allen Valley and village of the year 2008. The award-winning market town Hexham is only 20 minutes drive away and has a 14th century Abbey, galleries, theatre, cinema, shops and a tourist information centre. Its market day is Tuesday.
