The town was developed from the 1950s through 1970s as a means to house the overspill of Liverpool. It is situated roughly 5 miles north of Huyton, the administrative HQ of the borough and about 6 miles north-east of central Liverpool. It is traditionally believed to be founded in 870 although there is evidence for settlement from the Bronze Age.
