Dewlish is a village in West Dorset located about seven miles north-east of Dorchester. It is sited in the valley of the small Devil's Brook, amongst the chalk hills of the Dorset Downs. In the nineteenth century the remains of two prehistoric mammoths were found in the hillside above the village; two of the tusks were taken to the county museum at Dorchester. There was once a Roman villa on the site of Dewlish, and in 1740 a Roman tessellated pavement was discovered in the village.
